Rifles are no different. I have a Marlin 444, JM stamped that probably never saw 100 rounds fired through it. The action is tight, and sometimes jams during cycling. I like the 300 grain jacketed hollow points for hunting. These have some punch reloaded with Hodgdon 322 powder. My favorite plinking loads are also 300 grain, but in lead format with IMR Trailboss.I was at the NRA show in Harrisburg PA in early Feb. The Marlin booth had a 39A with a JM barrel. The exhibitor said that Rem. is using up the old Marlin-made parts. The serial number is the best check for deciding who made it. Go to the marlin Forum for real info. I've got one made in 2002 (.44 w/98xxx s/n) and one in 1941 (39A w/B prefix).
