The rifle has only 3 digits in the serial number clearly stamped on the rear stock tang under the lever. The numbers are 590. These are the only numbers I can find on this rifle.

The "E" serial number prefix is a designation for 1948. Marlin used a letter system to designate the year of manufacture for several years.

The introductory years of the Model 39A did not use a letter prefix, namely 1939-41. The receiver should be case colored however. The finger lever will be "square backed" for 1939, and rounded for 1940-41. After resuming production of the 39A after the war in 1945, the letter B was used as a serial number prefix.
