07-19-2004, 06:06 PM. Hey guys, I asked for and received some very nice help in earlier posts concerning my Sears Gamefisher 5hp motor. I though (and maybe did) have a problem with the float sticking. I took the bottom bowl portion of the carburator off and gave it a throurough cleaning. It really didn't need it however as it was immaculate.Mar 13, 2014. #1. I picked up two super clean 1989 Sears Gamefisher 15hp motors at a flea market the other day. Neither one runs, but both look like brand new and came with the original manuals and hang tags from when they were sold. We usually carry 2 avg sized poeple and fishing equipment. (Battery, Minn Kota trolling mtr, gas tank...) If there is any additional info needed I will reply. Code prefix 298 indicated a motor built by Tanaka. The 217 indicates Eska, 225 represents Mercury Marine and 488 identifies a motor built by Johnson. Checked the lower unit for water this evening,after leaving it in the barrel overnight,and,yesterday's testing and decarb. Lower unit is water free,gunk in barrel all from the decarb.

If you have the water level to the vent screw on the lower unit, then you are probably uncovering the exhaust port and making it easier for the engine to run, no back pressure from the exhaust being submerged. Other than that, the water level does not make any sense.
