Day traders love low float stocks and for a good reason. Many are priced under $10 are are extremely volatile, moving 10%, 20%, 100% or even 1,000% each day. No, I’m not kidding you! But, I do need to warn you of something. As a new trader, trading low float stocks can be difficult but not impossible.
The short version. Floating stock is the number of shares of a company available to trade on the market. Floating shares are calculated by subtracting the restricted stock and closely held shares from shares outstanding. Low float stocks have fewer shares available on the market, while high float stocks have a lot. Most stocks are high float.Lending stocks to clients is an additional source of income for stock brokers, so they offer their traders to borrow the stock they have in their short-selling inventory. While there is no exact number to indicate low float, a general rule of thumb is that you can consider float below 10-20 million shares as low. To get the short interest, you take the short float, divide it by the float, and multiply by 100. For example, say a stock has one million shares in the float. Today’s short float report says there are 100,000 shares short. So 100,000 divided by one million gives you 0.1.
