The AW-4 might just handle the power of the 4bt. I have tried to beat AW-4s into submission without luck, including towing 6,000+ lb. trailers (and not gently!) and just plain being dumb. If you aren't planning to use your XJ to tow with, it should handle the 4bt. dodge 318 to jeep aw4. i've got a 93 dakota with a 5.2L/318, but a bad tranny. i have access to a good aw4 tranny out of a 96 xj, complete with wiring and everything. i know the aw4 has an AMC bolt pattern, but is there an adapter for the chrysler bolt pattern on the engine? this will go into the dakota. i'm also posting this in the jeep area.Looks like the AW4 has a separate bell housing. It may be possible to adapt the bell housing from the JR403, which is also has a separate bell to the AW4. The JR403 was the OE automatic that bolted to the 4BD1/2.
