The JD is the closest and cheapest but has been sitting outside.About the only difference is accessibility - the newer one doesn't have sheet metal around the net wrap, so it's a little easier to feed the net through and to get to the gearbox. It also has grease banks and greasable bearings on the rollers. With all that being said, I think the 688 made better looking bales.
