For 25 years these pistols served with the Bundeswehr and West German police. During the 1990s the Germans began phasing out the P1, fielding the P8 (a military version of the H&K USP), finally retiring the weapon altogether in 2004. The one I can get has matching numbers (unlike in the U.S. where the only part with a serial # is the reciever/frame, the European weapons have matching numbers on frame, barrel and slide). This one is allegedly a police trade-in and it has a nice, crisp trigger and the bore looks really good. The P1 even has a decocking function.

Well, I got an expert opinion on the P1 from the Walther forums. Basically, the serial number on my P1 is dated back to the 50s. So this gun he says likely went through a number of reworks and upgrades at the arsenal. Barrel, frame, slide would have all been replaced as the characteristics don't match a 50s era P1.This P1 was manufactured in December 1979, recognizable by the marking 12/79 on the left side of the slide. Interestingly, the P1 shown on Walther P1 9mm Surplus Pistol Review - Firearms News has the serial number of 420670, and 2/80 on slide. Also it doesn't have any rework marks on both sides of frame.

I picked up a Manurhin PP in .22 a few months ago and had never investigated the s/n for production date. It has a s/n of 11077 which makes it a pretty early production. Manurhin PP 10002 - 53841LR 03/54 to 08/85 per D. Marschall's book. I also think a Gen 1 or Gen 2 doesn’t make much difference although the Gen 2 is a little longer and will take more brands of optic sights. That is my understanding as well.
